Hemorrhoids Treatment Information: Symptoms, Conditions, Causes, Risks
Hemorrhoids Care Plan
Internal Hemorrhoids: are located inside the rectum. They generally do not hurt or itch and are typically not harmful.External Hemorrhoids: are located on or around the rectum. They may burn, itch, or bleed and may become strangulated (cut off from blood supply). External hemorrhoids are generally the most irritating and common.
Hemorrhoid Prevention
- Avoid prolonged sitting. If working, stand or walk as frequently as possible. When sitting avoid direct rectal pressure. Shift your weight as often as possible while sitting.
- Avoid lifting heavy objects. When lifting do not hold your breath. Always exhale to avoid straining.
- Eat a high fiber diet and drink plenty of water to keep stools soft and avoid constipation. If constipated avoid straining during bowel movements. Take stool softeners, prunes, or other natural laxatives to soften stools.
- Control coughing and diarrhea as they may irritate hemorrhoids and increase swelling and discomfort.
- Avoid prolonged periods of time on the toilet. Bowel movements should not take longer than 3-5 minutes.
- Exercise regularly. Develop an exercise schedule and exercise 3-4 times per week.
